Will the smartboard replace the blackboard?

Everyone knows the good "old" black board and nearly everyone of us has written on it during school time... but what happened to it?? Where is the good old chalk? Where are the white stripes on your fingers and clothes after you have written on it? Is it "old school" knowing that the black board exists? Do we have to be ashamed of saying that we kind of miss the black board? No, we have not! But one gets the impression that pupils nowadays fewer and fewer get in touch with it... but why?
The answer: New media at school - and especially the smart board! If you go to school in these days you will not see black boards any longer, just a few "survived". What you can see in a classroom are white boards connected to a flatscreen, a beamer, a TV or a laptop. You can write on them with special pens, you can wash the written things away with something that looks like a sponge but works without water and you can create figures by tapping on a symbol that appears on the side of the smartboard. You are able to show power point presentations, movies and pictures. That sounds quite great, because you do not have to bring your laptop to school to show a power point presentation and find a white place on the wall in the classroom to show it. You can type notes that are important for your lesson with it, and the pupils cannot complain about handwriting as it often came up with the black board. Nonetheless, during my school time we did not have anything else than the black board and a lesson worked at all. I have to say, that I really am a fan of the black board and that I am sorry that it disappears and already has disappeared in many classrooms.
Even though I have to say that the smartboard makes it easier to use new media at school and that it is quite interesting for the pupils to get in touch with this new way of teaching, I will miss the black board as a teacher and it will still take some time until I get friends with it...
